Americans oppose renaming AI to “Superintelligence” 2-to-1
'Clear opposition to the rename: 40% of US adults oppose replacing “Artificial Intelligence” with “Superintelligence” and only 20% support it. Opposition grows with age, from evenly split among 18–29s (31% each) to 46% oppose vs. 13% support among 65+. No party backs the change, though Republicans are closest to even at 27% support vs. 30% oppose.
'“Superintelligence” loses on every measure: only 11–15% prefer it for positive impression, trustworthiness or comfort with important personal decisions. “Artificial Intelligence” leads on impression (36%) and comfort (33%).
'Distrust goes beyond the name: about a third choose “Neither” when asked which term wins on positive impression, trust, and comfort for all three questions. Changing the label won’t win over skeptics, and “Superintelligence” adds to their doubts rather than easing them.
